Homemade Hummus with Za’atar Roasted Pinenuts
By: Merritt Taylor
Homemade hummus can feel like a luxury. It is smooth and creamy and always tastes so much better than store bought. That being said, homemade hummus is actually surprisingly easy to make at home, requires few ingredients, and comes together so quickly. It is also customizable in regards to spices and pairings, making it the perfect party appetizer or a something to keep on hand for a quick snack.
I have always loved making homemade hummus, and I know you will enjoy it too. It can be an impressive dip to bring out for guests and after trying this recipe, you will want to make it over and over again for yourself and others.
This hummus uses classic flavors of chickpeas, tahini, and garlic that are combined with some delicious spices. Uniquely, this hummus also is paired with some za’atar roasted pine nuts that not only had a ton of flavor but give a little texture to your hummus. This post will walk you through making creamy hummus that comes out smooth and delicious every time.
Common Questions for Homemade Hummus
Do I Need Canned or Dry Chickpeas?
You can use both canned or dry chickpeas for homemade hummus. Canned chickpeas are a faster grab and require no extra effort on your part. I recommend canned chickpeas if you want to whip up a batch of hummus on the same day.
You can also use dry chickpeas that have been soaked over night in water. I recommend adding 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. This will help tenderize your chickpeas by softening them more quickly.
How Long Does Hummus Last?
Hummus will last for about a week in your fridge. Since this hummus is homemade, you may experience some separation, which can be combatted with a little olive oil and a good stir.
Though it is possible to freeze hummus, I do not recommend it. The texture for hummus is best fresh and you may find a defrosted hummus has a different texture than fresh!
What are some Toppings for Homemade Hummus?
A good topping is one of the best things about serving hummus. I like to serve my hummus with za’atar roasted pinenuts, and I have included the recipe below.
Other toppings include roasted red peppers, caramelized onions and mushrooms, chopped parsley, or fresh lemon zest. You can even do a combination of these!
What does Homemade Hummus Go With?
Since hummus a delicious spread or dip, it can go with so many different things.
Try serving hummus with some gluten free buckwheat crackers with everything seasoning. These are a crunchy and easy cracker that so good!
Hummus is a great pairing for vegetables too. I love serving hummus with my garlic and parmesan roasted broccolini!
Try making homemade hummus for your salmon breakfast toast! It is a creamy spread that goes so well toasted bread and smoked salmon.
My Hummus is Really Thick, Is that Normal?
Having thick hummus could be a result of a few things. The consistency of your tahini will have an effect on the hummus consistency. Make sure your tahini is well stirred so that the natural oil makes it into your dip.
The chickpeas could also change the consistency of the hummus. If you soaked your beans over night or used canned may slightly change the texture.
If you find your hummus is so thick that it can not be blended, do not fear! You can add in some extra water to start. Adding water 1-2 tablespoons at a time. If you add in a whole extra 1/3 cup of water and still do not like the consistency, switch to olive oil for 2-4 tablespoons. By that time, your hummus should be well smoothed.

How To Serve and Store Hummus?
Hummus can be served fresh with any topping that you want. I suggest drizzling your hummus with olive oil and then putting toppings with that olive oil. Served with crackers or chips, every can get a little topping and a lot of hummus with each bite.
You can store hummus in your fridge in an air tight container for about 1 week.
